USA TRAVEL GUIDE, “THE SOUTHEAST” WEST VIRGINIA

WEST VIRGINIA: THE MOUNTAIN STATE

BY CLAY LARROY

The purposes of traveling are different for different people. There are some people who travel for the sake of pleasure. The people that are heavily burdened either at their domestic front or at their offices move too far off places for relieving their worries and anxieties. The poets and writers make a trip to distant places for collection of facts for their writings. Businessmen also visit various places to enquire as to whether there are scopes for expansion of their business. Travelling provides the benefit of sightseeing and gives pleasure to the visitor. In addition, it gives a scope to an individual to have firsthand knowledge of variegated people inhabiting the world. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

The Exhibition Coal Mine is an hour's drive south, and one can see a real coalmine. Here, one can take a tour, ride the "train" to areas of mine once in action and get a lesson on the hardships and improvements of coal mining. Bring a jacket, as the temperature is always 58 degrees.

The Capitol Building continues to be the number one tourist attraction. Built in 1863 the magnificent dome stands nearly 300 feet above the Kanawha River, which runs in front of the building.

Criel Mound is an Indian burial ground, dating back to perhaps 250 B.C. Originally, it was built in a cone, but the top was leveled in 1840 so that a judge's stomach could be built as horseracing took place around the base of the mount. Excavations have found 13 skeletons in the mound.

The Clay Center is a children's paradise, filled with loads of exhibits and "hands on" things to do. The Earth City exhibit explores earth science while the gizmo factory exhibit gives children the opportunity to create. The health royale and the child's space exhibits allow children a fantastic learning experience.

The Governor's Mansion, located on the Kanawha River, built in 1924 and a magnificent period mansion. The entrance area is one of the most striking aspects of the mansion as it is a black and white Tennessee marble floor, flanked on the left and right by a gorgeous stairway.

Located on the Capitol grounds, The West Virginia Veterans Memorial is an outstanding tribute to every veteran who has given their lives in every war since WWI. It is a very emotional and impressive monument.

The West Virginia Cultural Center is a feast of education for the entire family. It offers a delightful history of West Virginia, displaying artifacts and art from the area. This is THE place to learn about the history of West Virginia, which is rich, indeed.

The Craik - Patton house, built in 1834 by Rev. James Craik has also been the residence of George S. Patton from 1858 until his death in the Civil War. General George S. Patton III was the grandson of this great Colonel of the Civil War. Today the property is restored, containing a desk that once belonged to President George Washington.
