FAMILY TRAVEL

       BY CLAY LARROY

There is nothing more exciting than traveling. Whether you are going for a road trip to see something new in your own state, or heading off to somewhere for the very first time to visit a city you have always dreamed of, there are some travel basics that you should know. Travel in the off seasons from November to April, to avoid crowds, save money and enjoy temperate weather. In those months, many families with children cannot travel due to school commitments, making many tourist attractions much less crowded. This may also result in lower costs for airfare and hotels.  When you are ready to plan a vacation contact me!

Choosing Travel Destinations For Your Family
By

Deciding on a travel destination has to be the hardest part of a holiday plan when planning a family holiday. If all the family members have similar interests then the job is made that much easier. If the entire family wants to laze around at the beach then select a beach resort. If they are interested in camping out then look out for a suitable camp location. The problem arises only when each family member has a varied choice and idea for the holiday. It is always difficult to find somewhere that will get every family member's approval.
While planning a family travel, the first thing is to find out what each person wants. Once you establish everyone's individual preference, discuss the various options you have. Make a list of the possible destinations that you can visit, and then collect as much information as possible about the locations. Any information you want is available online. There are plenty of tourist sites that give you all the details. These sites also give a detailed account of sightseeing attractions, and the activities that you can do at the different holiday spots. Many will also have photographs giving you a better idea about your destination.
Travel sites provide information about the stay, the food and other amenities available. If the place you select does not have decent accommodation then going there would be a waste of time. Find out if the accommodation you want to stay at, serves meals. It would be nuisance staying at one place and going for meals to another. Also check out things like ATM's and medical facilities. The location you select must cater to your specific needs too. What if the hotel you selected does not allow pets? You wouldn't be able to take your dog with you. What if there are no entertainment avenues for your children? These factors must be taken care of while making travel plans for the family or else your holiday can get ruined.
You can also opt for package tours. Nowadays the markets are teeming with various family travel packages. After checking up the various packages you can select one which gets the approval of all your family members.
Whichever you decide, being well informed will help when you are brain-storming with your family. Whether you opt for a package tour or not, careful research and planning will help you choose a holiday destination that addresses every family member's interest and suits your budget too.

FAMILY TRAVEL

        BY CLAY LARROY

Travel is so much more that simply hopping on a flight to a new destination. If you plan it correctly, it could be a thrilling time you'll never forget. Planning a trip is fun as there are tons of things to do and see. Do you know how to plan a trip effectively? Packing light is key to making your travels as easy and free of stress as possible. Bring one carry on bag that includes everything you need, not necessarily everything you want. Your smart packing will pay off when you are happily carrying one bag around on vacation instead of lugging around multiple bags. When you want to plan a vacation contact me! Read the article below for a remarkable perspective on travel.

Tips for Traveling with Kids: Airport Safety
Copyright (c) 2008-2013 April Aguren

More so in this modern age, the airport can be one of the most challenging parts of a journey. With all of the security issues and armed guards in the airport today, young children can very easily become frightened and anxious.

However, there are ways to help your children remain calm and comfortable throughout their experience at the airport, and part of that process is making sure that you are able to pay closer attention to your children during your airport journey. In order to make sure that you can keep your attention focused on your children as you navigate airport security, you need to plan ahead so that everything you will need to present to airport security and the ticket desk, will be close-at-hand and easy-to-reach.

From showing kids how to handle the screening process to helping pack their carry-on bags, you can look forward to a fun experience at the airport, when you have made the right preparations. Here are some simple ways to prepare for the airport when traveling with kids:

1. Arrive to the airport as early as possible. When you find yourself rushing to the airport or anywhere else, important items are frequently left behind. A decade ago, we could get through airport security, even if we left our driver's license at home. But these days, a missing driver's license could very well mean that you will not get into the airport, let alone get on your airplane. A document organizer can help you keep your identification and plane tickets all in one place. If you are traveling out of the country with your child(ren), don't forget their passports. Also if only one parent is traveling internationally, it's best to have a letter of permission from the other parent acknowledging that you are allowed to take the child(ren) out of the country. Plan to arrive at least two hours before your flight, so you can get your bags checked, have enough time to visit the restroom, get through security, and to be relaxed and comfortable as you board the airplane.

2. Locate restrooms close to your gate. You can almost always expect some last-minute trips to the restroom, especially with children in tow, so call the airport ahead of time to find out where restrooms are located in the area of the airport you plan on using. Planning your route - even at the airport terminal - will help you maximize your time, and avoid unnecessary delays.

3. Practice the airport screening process at home. Some kids may be alarmed or scared by the airport screening process, but you can help them become more comfortable by practicing at home. Just let them know what to expect, and walk them through the steps, so they are not overwhelmed at the last minute. Check your airline's website for the latest security requirements. It will detail out what items can and cannot be taken on board as carry-on luggage and what must be checked through to your destination.

4. Keep snacks on hand. You may need to take a break during your airport travels, and you won't want to waste time standing in line at the food court or concessions stands if you're on a tight schedule. Pack a few snacks that the kids will enjoy, but be prepared to discard them before entering the last gates for your flight, if necessary.

5. Help the kids pack their backpacks and carry-on luggage. You want to avoid last-minute delays at the X-ray machine as much as possible, so make sure your kids aren't sneaking in extra items at the last minute. Let them know that the bags will be checked with the X-ray machine as you enter the gates, and help them pack the bags carefully to comply with all security guidelines.

6. Point out the security officers when you arrive. Make sure your kids know who to ask, if they get lost. This is especially important for larger families traveling together; explain that security officers will be wearing a particular uniform, and standing by the gates and entryways at the airport. Your kids should be prepared to talk to a security officer if they drift away from your traveling group by mistake.

7. Make sure kids are dressed for traveling. Uncomfortable clothing can make it very difficult to travel without stress, so make sure everyone is wearing clothing that is comfortable and clothing that can be removed easily if necessary. Layers work best for traveling, especially when you're crossing climates and time zones. Pack at least one extra set of clothes with the carry-on luggage for very young kids, who may be at risk for spilling something or soiling their clothes.

8. Give older kids a map of the airport. If you are traveling with both young kids and teens, consider partnering everyone up and giving the oldest a map. This can help everyone navigate back to the right area, in case they get lost, and it will make it much easier to keep everyone on schedule.

9. Instruct kids not to talk to strangers. The airport is a crowded, busy place, so it's essential that kids practice safety first. Make sure they know not to talk to strangers or even other kids as you move around the airport, and keep them as close to you as possible.

When you're traveling with young children, safety is always a top priority. Traveling with kids is a fun and exciting time for the whole family, but it does require some planning and organization to make sure everything runs smoothly. Preparing young children with what to expect, and how to handle emergencies is also a great way to help them build the skills they need for traveling safely; just plan ahead with any or all of these travel tips for a fun adventure the whole family can enjoy!

10 Family Friendly Travel Tips

Traveling with the family can be a nightmare. Not only is family travel expensive if you can't find affordable airline tickets, it's also a huge inconvenience for you and for your fellow travelers. The key to a smooth travel experience is to plan ahead and prepare, as much as possible, for the unexpected.

1. Book non-stop flights. Although you may not be able to find non-stop flights with cheap airline tickets, avoiding extra time in the airport during layovers and the possibility of delays or cancellations is hugely beneficial when you're traveling with family. Plus you'll never have to wake a sleeping baby. It can never hurt, however, to check discount airfare sites for the most affordable non-stop airline tickets.

2. Pack your child's travel carry-on with a surprise. Stuff you kids backpack full of new toys, games, and activities. Or, you may even want to consider wrapping a few old items like a present. You'd be surprised how exciting an old toy can become after it's pulled out of new wrapping paper.

3. Schedule extra time. Whether you're traveling with discount airfare or with full-priced airline tickets in hand, every traveler has to go through the same check-in and security routine. Always build in plenty of time for check in and connecting flights; everything takes twice as long and is twice as complicated when you're traveling with children. Don't forget to double check that TSA prohibited items list before heading to the airport for updates on carry-on or checked items to avoid delays at the security gate.

4. Reserve seats in advance. Eliminating any unpredictability when traveling with your family is a plus. When buying your airline tickets always check to see if you can secure your seat assignments in ahead of time. Consider booking your family's seats all together, splitting up the family if traveling with another adult to avoid in-flight sibling feuds, or trying to find aisle seats for easy maneuvering. Also, even if you booked advanced seating, ask at the gate if the flight is full; you may be able to request a vacant seat between you and a fellow passenger.

5. Check flight restrictions when booking. Cheap flights can sometimes come with hidden restrictions such as strict cabin baggage weight limits or fees for checking strollers.

6. Test your stamina in advance. You may be able to benefit from cheap airfare by paying for one less child if you can handle having your child sit on your lap in a chair at home for the length of your flight.

7. Schedule flights during sleep time. Use discount airfare to try to find cheap airline tickets around the time your child normally naps. Also consider booking redeye flights; not only will you find cheap airfare, you may be able to benefit from having you child sleep through a nighttime flight.

8. Board first or last. You receive the same boarding privileges with cheap airline tickets as you do with regular-priced tickets: when traveling with children you'll have the option of boarding first. Early boarding can be convenient because it allows you extra time to get situated; however, boarding last will cut down on the time your kids have to wait on the plane.

9. Beware of bulkhead seats. What you gain in legroom with bulkhead seats you'll lack in under-the-seat storage, which is even more valuable when traveling with children. Also these seats often lack armrests, preventing your child from comfortably cuddling with you.

10. Check your luggage. You already have plenty to keep track of when you're traveling with family - multiple little ones, tickets, IDs, bags - but you can eliminate unnecessary hassle when you check your bags. Think of it this way: what you save on discount airfare you can put toward the extra fees airlines may charge you for checking bags.

7 Top Family Bonding Road Trip Games

By: Bruce Hokin

Do you find your kids often arguing with each other in the back seat, or they are "off with the fairies", headphones on and starting blankly out the window as the family travels on a road trip? How do you feel? Lonely, Bored?

The trip is rather dull without the interaction from the kids. Agreed? Don’t worry… help is at hand.

The trick is to play fun games with the kids that provide for interaction with all members of the family. Here are some games that are educational, while still being heaps of fun.Ready to make a start? Let’s go!

Family Interaction Game #1. "I Spy" – with variations

No road trip would be complete without a (many) games of "I Spy".
This works well for younger kids especially. Take turns to look for something the other players have to guess correctly. You begin your turn by saying "I spy with my little eye something beginning with a (letter)_____". The other player tries to guess it from the surrounding items or countryside. The person who correctly guesses gets to have the next turn.

Variations. How about I spy with my little eye something with a color of_______, or I spy with my little eye something that is associated with_______ flying (bird, plane), milking, plowing, riding (horse, bike, car etc)

Family Interaction Games #2. Geography Game

This is a great game for players (old and young) to brush up on their world knowledge.

The first player thinks of a place or country (say London). The next player has to think of a place or town or city with the last letter of the previous place mentioned. In this case it would be N, (for Naples), being the last letter of London, and so on. The game continues until someone gets stumped and cannot think of an appropriate place. Each place, town or city can only be used once.

Family Interaction Games #3. When I was Young / When you were born

From experience, kids love to hear about 2 things especially – when they were born and when their parents were young, like themselves.

The game is started by one or both the parents retelling stories of their childhood and events surrounding the birth of the children. Tales relating to the parents schooling, how they traveled to school, how far they walked to school and favorite/worst teachers.

Events at the birth relating to the dash to the hospital, first impressions at the birth, some major character traits and first words are all great conversation starters.

Family Interaction Games #4. Math – Number Plate Bingo

Good game for learning number recognition skills.

Each player lists out numbers 1-50. Then they are to look for those numbers on number plates. The one who completes their list first is the winner. To make this game spin out a little longer only number plates of a certain state or color can be used.

Family Interaction Games #5. My best, my most scary, my best…

Each child (and the parents) try to remember a certain event in their lives (or from their imagination) from the choices below or make your own: (each choice represents 1 round). Players agree on the type of event before each round.

My most scary moment

My best time

My favorite holiday

My most stressful event

Each player then recounts the event in their life (actual or imagined). After each round the family members vote whose story is best, based on on originality and graphic detail The one with the most votes wins the round. The one with the most winning rounds after 5 rounds wins.

Family Interaction Games #6. Maths – Number Search

Each player (kids and adults included) lists 1 – 100 in a column and the winner is the first player that finds all the numbers on the list by finding the number words or symbols on advertisements, road speed signs and distance signposts. Write each occurrence against the item on your list as you find it.

Family Interaction Games #7. Car Make/Model Reversii

This will have the whole car in fits of laughter...guaranteed! If you see a Cadillac Eldorado (for instance) whiz past the players try and quickly say the make and model spelled BACKWARDS. So for this example the kids will be trying to say "Callidac" (Cadillac spelled backwards) and the pronunciation would be something like Call-i-dac.

Then for the model Odarodle (Eldorado spelled backwards) they would try to say O-dar-odle. Once people are trying to say these words quickly, as other cars zoom past, it quickly turns into a real laugh... you’ll remember this game for years. (I don’t know of anyone else who has played this game apart from our family – so you could say it’s exclusive.)

I sincerely hope the whole family enjoys theses games and has a great holiday… http://thecostbenefitforum.blogspot.com/

FAMILY TRAVEL

       BY CLAY LARROY

Leisure travel is a wonderful experience that everyone should have in their lifetime. Even business travel can be made enjoyable. There are some aspects of travel that can detract from your enjoyment.  When planning to fly for a trip, don't forget any frequent flier miles you might have racked up. It does you no good to hang onto those once you've already gone on your big vacation. Even if you don't have enough miles to cover the whole trip, many airlines will allow you to discount your rate using your miles. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Family Vacation - Tips to Keep Everyone Safe

No matter how much fun you plan on having on your family vacation, it is important for you to take the time to implement some preventive measures that will help keep you and your loved ones safe. With crimes and frauds on the rise, you don't want to end up with any situations arising that would put a serious damper on all of the fun and excitement that you have planned. Here are a few things for you to keep in mind as you are getting ready for your family vacation.
If you plan to drive to your destination, make sure that your vehicle is in good shape. Now is not the time for you to put off or ignore any needed repairs, no matter how minor they may seem. For instance, if your breaks were due for maintenance and you decided you wanted to wait until after the family vacation, you may end up with an unexpected roadside emergency. You are putting the lives of your loved ones at risk for danger. Save time and money and keep your family safe by making sure that your vehicle is in good mechanical condition before you leave for your trip.
Another way you can increase the safety while you are on your family vacation is to make sure that everyone stays together. It may be very tempting for everyone to go off and do their own thing, remember you all decided to take a trip so you could spend some quality time with each other. If everyone has different ideas about which attractions and events they should go and see, try to come up with a plan that makes it possible for everyone to see their desired events without being separated from the family. The reason why it is not such a good idea for everyone to split up in unfamiliar territory is because there are many different things that can happen if you are not a local. For instance, you may not know which area of town is a bad one, and no one wants to be caught in a bad situation at any time during a trip.
As much as you like to charge and use credit for all of your purchases, it may be a better idea for you to think about carrying travelers' checks instead. There are a ton of swindles that involve credit card numbers and bank accounts. Even if you don't plan to spend much money, you need to protect yourself and your loved ones by making sure that your finances don't become compromised. Not all places and retail establishments check identification to make sure that the person presenting a card is the owner of it. By the time you realize that your cards have been stolen and report them, the thief may have taken some liberties and racked up expenses. Take some extra precautions anytime you go traveling, especially if you are going on a family vacation so that you can spend your time enjoying and relaxing in the sun.
If you are considering a New Orleans family vacation, there are many unique things to do that appeal to everyone. For more information on one such attraction, visit http://www.auduboninstitute.org.
