Called the Emerald of the
Caribbean, Montserrat is a beautiful island covered by rainforest. The place
has Irish influences, and the people here are well known for their
friendliness. The place is also ideal for spending time in the heart of nature
or for sun bathing. The island is volcanic and was once colonized by the Irish trying to escape persecution. Montserrat is quite little and is not usually a place tourists go when traveling to the Caribbean. However, getting off the beaten path will surely be worth your while as the beaches here are truly wonderful and the landscape is beautiful, with lush forests, hills and waterfalls. The locals celebrate Saint Patrick's Day as a tribute to their Irish heritage. There are many activities on the island, such as hiking, bird watching or climbing.
Unfortunately, things have changed a lot during the last years. More than a decade ago the volcano on the island started erupting again. Almost half of the island is now hard to access, and it is not recommended to venture onto the pyroclastic fields. The capital of the island was entirely destroyed, and now, the people traveling to this area are those interested in the volcano's activities.
Still, if you want to learn about the secrets the Emerald of the Caribbean still has, you can visit the northern part of the island where tourism is still flourishing. No damage by the volcano eruptions reached this area. A new airport was built, and you can fly in here from Antigua.
On the beautiful beaches of Montserrat, life is still tranquil and wonderful. The atmosphere is low key, and the breeze is perfect. The beaches are not very crowded, and you will notice that the once white sand is now grey due to the volcanic ash brought here by the wind. White sands can still be found at Rendezvous Bay. In order to get there, you will have to take a water taxi or hike. The beach here is pristine, with pink shells and corals everywhere. The water is blue and clear, and there is no better place in Montserrat to enjoy a day at the beach.
An activity that nature lovers will surely enjoy is the turtle egg hatching. You may have seen the little turtles hatching from eggs on TV, but it is an entirely different story when you see it live. This takes place in August and September, and is a great event to witness. If you want to watch little turtles swimming around, you can do so at Woodlands Beach.
Travelers can also enjoy the beautiful views of the reefs around the island. Scuba diving is among one of the top activities as the underwater landscape is truly wonderful, with multi-colored corals and different species of fish.
