ELEUTHERA, “TRANQUIL”
BY CLAY LARROY
BY CLAY LARROY
It
doesn't matter if you take a trip across the state line or the border, being far
from home can be exciting and also a bit stressful. When considering traveling,
it is important to think of the best mode of travel. Traveling by car
can offer many more sights and opportunities for side trips. Traveling by train
can offer a chance to relax and get some work done if they wanted. Planes can
cover ground fast but don't allow much movement and one cannot get off the
plane in flight. Each mode of travel has its own advantages and disadvantages
to be considered. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!
ELEUTHERA
Eleuthera
is the fourth most populated island of The Bahamas, with approximately
11,000 residents. Most who live here either fish for bounty or farm the rolling
acres of pineapple plantations. Eleuthera is an island of casual
sophistication, housing isolated communities, well-developed resorts, rocky
bluffs, low-lying wetlands and massive coral reefs that create magnificent
backdrops. Harbour Island on the other hand was once the capital of The
Bahamas. It was ranked as "The Best Island in the Caribbean" by Travel & Leisure magazine back in 2005, and boasts
lush tropical greenery and magical pink sand beaches.
How To Get Around
On
the mainland of Eleuthera, you may choose to rent a car to get around, but
taxis are readily available by phone and are usually stationed at the airports,
docks and hotels. On Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, you'll find that
bicycles, golf carts and scooters are the preferred mode of transport, as well
as walking, and a number of companies offer vehicles to take advantage of those
options. Pedestrians should remember to first look right and then left before
crossing streets.
Ferries
Harbour Island and Spanish Wells are easily reached by scheduled or
chartered ferry service from North Eleuthera. Ferries are located at dockside
and usually depart on the half hour, but you can also make arrangements for
special pickups. The one-way fare ranges from $4.00 to $6.00 per person.
Rentals
You must be 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license for
all rentals. Visitors may use their home driver’s license for up to three
months or can apply for an international driver’s license if staying with us
longer. But remember, when you take to the road, please keep to the left.
Taxis
Service is provided by a number of independent operators, who are
generally stationed at the airport to meet incoming flights, at the docks and
major hotels. Although taxis are not metered and rates vary by island, they are
reasonable and are fixed by law. Surcharges often apply for more than two
persons and extra luggage. Suggested tip is 15% of fare. Taxi fares on Harbour
Island are approx. $5.00 per person from the dock to the various hotels, etc.
From the North Eleuthera Airport to the ferry dock, it is $10. Fares from the
three airports can range from $15.00 to neighboring towns up to $260.00 for
transport to outlying areas.
