ACCOMMODATIONS, “WHERE TO STAY?”

NATURISTS AND CLOTHING OPTIONAL, “NOTHING TO HIDE”
BY CLAY LARROY

Make the most of your travel experiences. Taking a cruise is a great way to see many different places when you travel. Cruises offer many activities and things to do while on the ship, while offering you the opportunity to explore different locations each time you arrive at a port. Travel is a great opportunity to learn more things. Time spent abroad helps you understand and appreciate diverse cultures. In addition, it encourages an acceptance and tolerance of ways of life that differ from your own. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Internationally, people of all ages frequent popular nude beaches, including children. Resorts tend to be far more restrictive, allowing only individuals 18 and older. If you are traveling with minors, check carefully into the rules and regulations of the resort you are visiting.
The United States has many more beaches and resorts than most people first imagine, mostly located in Florida and California. The Caribbean has a number of resorts offering clothing optional settings, but typically at adult-only facilities. Antigua, the Bahamas, Belize, Bonaire, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Grenada, St. Barths, St. Lucia, St. Martin and Turks and Caicos all offer clothing optional resorts, as do some areas of Mexico.

In Europe, a large number of Mediterranean beaches allow topless and nude sunbathing. France, Spain and Greece also have many clothing optional beaches and resorts. One of the most interesting of these resort cities is Cap d"Agde in France, which takes public nudity to a community level in certain areas of the town, allowing nudity on the streets, at the grocery store, and in restaurants. In the South Pacific, Australia, Thailand and Bali all have naturist resorts and beaches. Keep in mind that often the clothing optional areas are marked as such, and venturing beyond the permissible confines of the naturist area risks a fine. Several cruise ship companies also provide clothing optional cruises.
While most bookings for naturist vacations are for independent couples, escorted trips are also available to resorts and international destinations. The social setting of a group provides a built-in enclave of like-minded people, and many feel more comfortable. Tour operators hosting escorted trips have knowledge of the destination and of local rules and assist travelers with becoming acquainted with a new destination, the naturist setting or both.

As with most communities, the naturists have their own code by which they adhere and expect others to conform.
  • No staring
  • No lewd remarks or gestures
  • Keep a towel with you to use when sitting on furniture
  • No photography of anyone not with your party
  • No unmerited or unwanted advances or attention
  • Finally, universal respect for "house rules" :the local rules of the resort hosting the naturist community that may govern issues like clothing at mealtimes, jewelry, and permissible activities and hours
Because of the psychologically sensitive nature of nudity, it is important that the traveler fully discuss potential issues with their traveling companions and determine well in advance how to handle situations, such as one party suddenly becoming uncomfortable with the setting or with planned activities.
True naturists will explain to you that anything that you can do clothed can be done while unclothed. Activities include backpacking, canoeing, scuba, skydiving, and kayaking, along with more common activities like dancing, volleyball and sunbathing. Some obvious precautions are in order, such as sunscreen, but in general, people comfortable in a clothing optional setting are extroverts, and the available activities reflect their outgoing natures. However, naturist retreats emphasize being comfortable, and those wishing not to participate in an activity should not feel pressured to do so.
It has been said that if we were meant to be naked in front of each other, we would have been born that way. If a naturist lifestyle appeals to you, there is a world of destinations suited to accommodate!

ACCOMMODATIONS, “WHERE TO STAY?”

NATURISTS AND CLOTHING OPTIONAL, “NOTHING TO HIDE”

BY CLAY LARROY

If you're looking to get away from it all with a trip away from home, don't forget to travel smart. Regardless of whether you are traveling to a nearby location for the weekend or taking a week-long destination vacation, you are always going to benefit from some tips and ideas on how to make the whole process, more fun and less stressful. Take time each day to alleviate stress while traveling or vacationing and you will thank yourself for it when you get back home. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Clothing optional vacations are like all other vacations, except that many of your companions will not be wearing clothing. Stripped down to its essentials, clothing optional means just that: clothing may or may not be worn at an individual’s discretion. The related term "nudist" has a somewhat different meaning. At nudist resorts, the expectation is that everyone will be unclothed most of the time. The more commonly accepted term is "naturist", which is the practice of being nude in a mixed social setting. A growing number of resorts and cruise lines offer clothing optional settings, and the trend seems to be taking off. Naturists believe that the body is something to be accepted and respected and is not inherently shameful or problematic.
Clothing optional vacations are not for everybody, and if the concept offends you, please read no further. For those of you considering a clothing optional trip, however, you will find this brief introduction a good way to move past misconceptions and use the assistance of a professional for booking your naturist vacation.

Clothing optional recreation is not a recent development. Since World War II in Europe, clothing optional beaches have been the norm. Likewise, some Caribbean resorts have always had a topless or nude area. What is new is the greater number of resorts and cruise lines that now cater to a naturist setting.
One important point to make at the outset: naturists are careful and adamant in their insistence that naturism is not sexual. While they acknowledge the sexual nature of humans, naturism is not a code word for sex. Note, however, that the some destinations restrict participation to adults, and others further restrict participation to couples only, meaning no single individuals or same sex couples are allowed.

Many first-time naturists feel nervous about their initial outing. Many feel that because their bodies are not model "perfect", that they should not appear nude in front of others. However, the reality of the situation is that the people who go to clothing optional resorts are just like everyone else. Some are tall and some are short; some are petite and some are large. Within an hour, most become comfortable with the setting and their place in it.

PLANNING A CAMPING TRIP? TOP TIPS EVERY ADVENTURER SHOULD KNOW

By Clay Larroy

Camping is one of the funniest outdoor adventures that you can experience in life. It is one of the funniest things that life has to offer you that is why you are going to want to make sure you get the most out of camping. You can do that by reading this article here.

One of the most important parts of your camping gear is your tent. The tent you buy should suit your needs and the size of your camping party. If you have young children, you probably want to purchase a large tent so they can sleep in the same tent with you. If your children are old, buy them their own tent so they don't have to bunk with the adults.

Prior to leaving, take a few minutes to make a checklist of everything that you need. There is nothing worse than getting to a campsite and then finding out that you don't have what you need to be comfortable. A checklist is a great aid as you are packing. Try to start getting things together several days before you leave so you have plenty of time.

Always take more water than you think you will use when you go on a camping trip. Many times, people forget how much water is needed. It is used for drinking, washing dishes and hands, cooking and even brushing your teeth. Water is not something you want to be without.
As a courtesy to other campers, don't leave your lighting on overnight, if you are close to others. Pack a timer that you can attach to your lights that will automatically shut them off after a certain time. Leaving lights on overnight is a popular complaint among most American campers!

When you go camping, be sure to wear closed-toe shoes. Walking in wooded areas, you can come across almost anything; not to mention things can fall on your feet. You may also want to take a hike. So the next time you go out camping, make sure to wear shoes that can go everywhere you want to go.
This article has provided you with a lot of great knowledge about how to get the most out of your camping experience. It's good to know that you have the option to enjoy yourself with a nice camping experience when you want to dedicate the time to do so, so get out there and do it.

Live life and travel often, the more you travel, the more memories you create!

ACCOMMODATIONS, “WHERE TO STAY?”

CAMPING IN THE USA

BY CLAY LARROY

Regardless of whether you are traveling to a nearby location for the weekend or taking a week-long destination vacation, you are always going to benefit from some tips and ideas on how to make the whole process, more fun and less stressful. Take time each day to alleviate stress while traveling or vacationing and you will thank yourself for it when you get back home. With all the chaos, jet-lag, partying and other excitement of travel comes a whole lot of stress on your mind and body. By the time most vacations are over, another one is needed to recover so taking a few minutes each day to rejuvenate will make it easier for you to resume your normal life when it's all over. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Packing Smart
The beauty of a camping trek is that you only need a sleeping bag, your clothes, and personal items - and a lot of positive energy! Pack light and check with your agent to see if there are any trip-specific luggage guidelines; if you are staying at a hotel on either end of the trip, you may be able to arrange storage for additional luggage.
Here are some general packing suggestions and ideas, but always ask for a trip-specific checklist before you go:
  • First, talk to your agent to get the latest airline regulations for carry-on items if you are flying, and pack accordingly
  • If you don’t already own any, consider buying clothing for the trip that blocks sun and bugs, dries easily, wicks away moisture, and is breathable - ask someone at your local outdoors shop for shopping advice
  • Dress casually and comfortably, packing clothes that layer well for unexpected temperature changes; note that you will probably have access to washing machines at some point during the trip
  • Hiking shoes or boots, secure and comfortable walking shoes, and waterproof sandals (you may also want a pair of easy-on/off flip flops)
  • Hat, scarf, and weather-proof gloves
  • Swimwear, sunscreen, and sunglasses
  • Camera, film, and binoculars
  • Alarm clock, watch, any power adapters you need (although your access to electricity may be limited), and a small torch flashlight
  • Insect repellent that’s 20% DEET or more
  • Temperature appropriate sleeping bag and travel pillow
  • Towel, face cloth, toiletries, and medicines
  • A way to carry important documents and cash that you do not want to leave at your campsite

First-Timer Fun
You may be pleasantly surprised to find how easy and relaxing it is to sleep in the great outdoors. Professional companies provide high-quality, heavy-duty tents, which really make a difference in your comfort level. If you are on a group trip with travelers you don’t know, you may be paired up with a few others of the same sex. Besides the sleeping bag you bring, your trekking company may also provide a thermal sleeping mat. If you really want more comfort, inquire about an inflatable mattress. Also note that some companies may take you to permanent campsites, where you’ll have access to primitive cabins or tent cabins.

What to Expect from Your Campsite
Trips can use both National and State park campsites and private campgrounds. Depending on the destinations and activities you choose, you may have hot showers and modern plumbing, and some sites even have swimming pools, bars, and laundry facilities on site. Rustic campgrounds do an authentic job of highlighting an area’s natural beauty and can be just as enjoyable. A good company will keep rough circumstances to a minimum to ensure that you absolutely love your trip. But also remember that if you choose to travel to some of the wildest or most remote natural attractions, you may want to prepare yourself for a fun but primitive experience.
Your Health & Fitness
Don’t worry! Anyone - at any fitness level - can enjoy an outdoor trip. Many activities are optional, and you have complete freedom choose to participate or explore and relax on your own. Most parks offer a variety of hiking trails for all levels, and many other activities do not require previous experience and are not fitness-related at all. Just make sure you tell your agent or the camping company about special health concerns in advance.
Budget & Logistics
Budget another $25 per day, at least, for miscellaneous costs. You may not have access to an ATM, so bring the amount of cash you’re comfortable carrying, along with traveler’s checks for the rest. You may also be asked to put a small amount of money toward a food budget for the group.
Also consider tipping your guide, who will work very hard on your behalf throughout the trip - $3 per person, per day is a good guideline.
Because of the nature of this kind of travel, you may also be required to purchase a special insurance policy that includes medical evacuation. Policies like this are not ways for travel companies to make extra money - they are usually affordable and in your best interest, as most standard health care plans do not cover many kinds of medical emergencies on the road.
Talk to your agent about any flight arrangements you need to make, if air tickets are not part of your package. Be sure to plan your flights so you have more than enough time to adjust to traveling and meet your guides. If you miss a departure, you will probably be responsible for additional expenses. Likewise, your agent will arrange any additional hotel stays that you need, or, if you are traveling alone, you may be able to share a room with another member of your group if you ask.
And if you can swing it... this might be the perfect time to tack on a weekend trip to a new or favorite city - it won’t hurt to see what your options are.

Breathe Easy
Once everything is set, you can relax and look forward to your journey. Just remember the importance of traveling responsibly - not only for your own safety, but also to protect the environment and natural resources you’ve come to see. Producing minimal trash, putting litter where it belongs, following your guide’s instructions, and drinking in moderation are all behaviors that show your respect for fellow travels and the fragile ecosystem you occupy. It won’t be too difficult to understand how important this is once you are surrounding by the best of America - one of the most unique and remarkable landscapes in the world.
Once you’ve completed your trip, you might find yourself wanting to make plans for another. It would take a lifetime to see even most of the country, but you can experience more of it, and its best attractions, with the help of an experienced outfitter and travel agent who will work together to make your camping vacation one of the best of your life.

ACCOMMODATIONS, “WHERE TO STAY?”

CAMPING IN THE USA

BY CLAY LARROY

It doesn't matter if you take a trip across the state line or the border, being far from home can be exciting and also a bit stressful. When considering traveling, it is important to think of the best mode of travel. Traveling by car can offer many more sights and opportunities for side trips. Traveling by train can offer a chance to relax and get some work done if they wanted. Planes can cover ground fast but don't allow much movement and one cannot get off the plane in flight. Each mode of travel has its own advantages and disadvantages to be considered. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

National journalist Charles Kuralt once said, ‘Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything. ‘
While US highways provide an undeniably efficient method of travel, it’s true that unless you journey off the beaten path, you may never see the amazing natural wonders found on the land we call the United States of America. Camping is widely known as one of the best ways to truly experience the outdoors, with easy access to the greatest attractions you can only see here: waterfalls, forests, swimming holes, hot springs, cold springs, canyons, mountain tops... rocks for climbing, rivers for rafting, trails for riding.
The places to go and things to do are endless, which is why the smartest way to start your trip is with a call to your travel agent, who can connect you to quality outfitters and expert guides who will make your vacation easy, affordable, and well worth every moment you spend on holiday. These passionate companies can take you to sites and offer experiences you could never create on your own, ensuring your comfort and safety along the way.
The Benefits of Using an Outfitter
Organized trips are designed to show you America’s best natural and cultural assets while providing an enjoyable vacation. Participating in some activities and traveling through some areas absolutely require guides, and even when not required, traveling with a guide is always a good idea. Camp guides can assist and instruct anyone from beginners to experts, and outfitters know exactly where and when to go, have special access to people and places you may not find on your own, and above all, have your safety and flat-out fun as their priority throughout the entire trip.
If you’ve never prepared for a camping trip away from home, you might be shocked at how many hours of planning and how much expensive equipment it takes, and even then, it might be three or four more trips before you are practiced at it and properly equipped. And if you have planned a trip on your own, you’ll certainly appreciate how easy camping is when someone else takes care of the details.
Use your travel agent to find a good company who’s been in business for a while, pays attention to quality, and is committed to giving you an amazing experience for a great value.

When to Camp
Most people associate great camping with great weather, but you can still camp year-round, you just need to pick the right destination and the right camp company, who will make your trip completely comfortable. There’s always something to do outdoors: wilderness hiking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, sea kayaking, canoe trips, photography, mountain biking, swamp tours and so much more...
Campers Come in All Ages
Talk to your agent about who you travel with, and you’ll be pleased to find lots of options for all kinds of groups, even for singles and campers who prefer custom, independent trips. Some trips are designed specifically to appeal to different age groups: young adult trips might focus on activities and nightlife that appeal to their age range, but there are no age restrictions whatsoever! Anyone can enjoy a trip into the wilderness.
Camping and outdoor activities are also great family experiences, and guides are trained to work with younger children. If you have children under 6, however, you may want to wait until they are older and can really appreciate your expedition... also, some companies do enforce minimum age requirements - just check with your agent before you book.

Camping Made Easy
Camping packages vary from company to company, but for the most part, your trip price includes:
  • A professional guide
  • Transportation during the trip
  • All camping equipment (except for a sleeping bag and personal items), including tents, food storage containers, lights, cooking equipment, etc.
  • Admission to parks, monuments, and other fee-based attractions in your itinerary
  • Additional meals, transportation, and lodging, depending on your package
  • Alternate activities and excursions if the weather doesn’t cooperate

WOMEN ONLY TRAVEL NEXT VACATION…IT’S YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS

BY CLAY LARROY

In the world of traveling, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced travelers alike. There are many websites, guides, books, videos, and other resources available. By writing this blog I hope that I am providing valuable information about wonderful vacation destinations. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Talk to a good travel consultant about your budget, all the places you want to see and the experiences you want to have, and together you can narrow down the choices to find the perfect trip. Luckily, travel agents are familiar with tour operators and can make this process quick and painless, pointing you to an appropriate company with a good reputation for quality and value. If you want to take a daughter or niece along, check with your travel consultant early on to find a tour company that allows minors.
As a relevant aside, a ‘tour’ may provoke an image of a big slow bus, but these days a tour, and using a tour operator, is a very different experience. In addition to planning the entire trip and providing you with a network of other women, a good tour company will also hand-pick hotels, restaurants, and activities perfect for this kind of intimate travel. Because of their relationships with destinations and guides, you often pay far less for a package than you would booking the components separately.
If you want a group of women to join you, remember that even adventure tours often have reduced rates for companions who would be just as happy relaxing and roaming the wilderness independently - just ask. On that note, if you have enough women committed to a trip, or if you are willing to break from a time-tested itinerary, you can ask the tour company to customize any aspect of the trip, from the type of food you eat to where you visit and how you get there, and they can usually accommodate.

For those who book the trip solo, you can waive a standard single supplement if you agree to share a room. Since it’s an all-women trip, your odds for being matched, and matched to someone with fairly predictable tastes, are better than ever.
One thing to note about many women’s tours is that because of their specialized itineraries and traveler grouping, they often require you to book and give a cancellation notice far in advance.
Before you go, your travel consultant will make sure to assist you with any passport or visa documentation that’s needed, in addition to passing along packing lists if your trip requires special clothing or equipment. Your agent will also cover travel and health insurance with you, and other costs that may not seem obvious, like tips (drivers, guides, porters, and maids all have varying tip rates, based on where you travel) and taxes. You should have a good idea of exactly how much the trip will cost, leaving you to determine how much spending money you can budget.
Finally, if your trip includes a long flight, start your pampering early by packing appropriately. Create a little kit for the plane that includes lip balm, a dry washcloth in a baggie (you can pour hot water into the bag at the end of the flight and take the cloth out for a warm refresher), a small toothbrush and toothpaste, a travel size bottle of your favorite hand lotion, a sleep mask, earplugs, a pair of socks, eye drops, and water. If you are traveling with friends, consider making extra kits as a thoughtful gift.

Also remember candles and essential oils for your hotel room and bath, and don’t forget a journal, if you want to use one. Journal or not, you may want to purchase disposable cameras and video cameras from a drugstore, so you won’t have to worry about keeping track of expensive equipment. When you return, you can request a DVD and CD of the video and images that you can transfer to your computer.
You really won’t have to do much else, other than look forward to the experience. While you are there, you can relax. Travel helps everyone, men and women alike, explore and experience the world we all share and recognize the limitations we often place on our bodies and minds. A women-only trip can provide the rest, motivation, excitement, and introspection you don’t easily find in daily life, leaving you energized and refreshed. Contact your travel agent today and find out how simple it can be.

WOMEN ONLY TRAVEL NEXT VACATION…IT’S YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS

BY CLAY LARROY

Traveling can be a great way to meet new people and experience other cultures. New friends are waiting to meet you in places you have only dreamed of traveling. It can be a wonderful way to see all that the world has to offer. Travel can be a hobby and an adventure that will lead you to unexpected places. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Why (and where) would women travel together? Just women - no men. A trip could be as simple as a weekend getaway with girlfriends to pick up a new handbag in the city. Or the desire could come from a deeper motivation... to learn, explore, experience, eat, share, exercise, anything, without having to take care of anyone but yourself, joined by women who would never question why that’s important to you.
Travel companies that specialize in women-only travel understand. Many have developed programs that appeal to everyone, regardless of age or physical fitness, bringing together women who choose to spend a few days of their life living and traveling against the grain - stress-free.
Women-only vacations tend to be unique, thoughtful, and purposeful. Most women would have to compromise at best if they tried to drag a husband or son or any other man on a week’s vacation filled with yoga, healthy food, afternoon tea, and moments for meditation.

While this kind of travel may sound contrived at first, it really can offer an experience you may never have otherwise. Bring your mother, sister, friend, or go by yourself and enjoy a small group setting, without the all-too-real safety risks of being a woman traveling alone. Women of all ages and interests travel together - and for all reasons. Recent college grads looking for a quick trip before entering the real world (file this one away - a women-only package tour also makes a great graduation gift), photography buffs, women who are trying to get in shape, women who want to learn to whitewater rafting, women who are trying to lose weight, or renew their faith.
While some tours are centered on specific themes, others simply allow travelers to experience whatever comes their way, in a setting and with a group designed to support vitality and relaxation. Even an introvert can enjoy a group itinerary, given adequate time and space to wander and roam. More independent and adventurous types can easily find trips packed with activities that match their personalities, and less adventurous types who want to take on a new challenge can relax in a group that helps you build confidence through accomplishment, sans the competition.

Because of this, traditional ‘guy’ activities are also common trip themes. You can finally learn, through professional instruction (usually by women), how to ride a horse, deep sea fish, kayak, or mountain bike. When you get back, you can practice your new skills... when you finally, officially know what you are doing. Tour operators are typically prepared for all skill levels from novice to adept, and the all-female environment provides a comfortable ambiance to learn or enhance a new activity.
Shopping, yoga, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, culinary training, and humanitarian work - you can do practically anything with a group of women and a reputable tour operator who takes care of all the details. The hardest part of a trip might be simply figuring out what you want to do - what would light you up and make every dollar you spend and every day away from work or family or home... worth it.

THE GAY TRAVELER, "A RAINBOW ADVENTURE"

BY CLAY LARROY

Leisure travel is a wonderful experience that everyone should have in their lifetime. Even business travel can be made enjoyable. There are some aspects of travel that can detract from your enjoyment.  When planning to fly for a trip, don't forget any frequent flier miles you might have racked up. It does you no good to hang onto those once you've already gone on your big vacation. Even if you don't have enough miles to cover the whole trip, many airlines will allow you to discount your rate using your miles. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

If you want to experience the culture and sights of another country, your travel consultant can give you a good idea of the local attitudes toward gay travelers. If, however, the trip is a "sun and beach" vacation, attitudes can often be more open and relaxed - in the right location.
Did you know?
  • If you’ve always wanted to visit the pyramids of Egypt, definitely seek specific advice and help with planning your vacation; Egypt, like many mostly Islamic countries, is an amazing destination but has strict social norms regarding affection in public
  • The quiet and tranquil beaches of the Bahamas may not be as easy to navigate with a gay companion as you might think - be sure to choose the right island and accommodations that market to gay travelers
In case you are wondering, the same TIA survey mentioned revealed the following United States cities as the most gay-friendly:
  • San Francisco, CA
  • Key West, FL.
  • New York City; New York
  • Provincetown, Mass.
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Miami-South Beach, FL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • New Orleans, LA
  • Palm Springs-Palm Desert, CA.

Good travel agents also know other less popular or commercial destinations that welcome gay travelers, including small mountain towns like Asheville, NC. Don’t feel that you must limit yourself to major destinations.
You also have the choice to travel independently or with an all-gay group. It’s up to you, of course: some people are more comfortable surrounded by other gay travelers and the opportunity to be more open and expressive. If the purpose of your trip is sightseeing and cultural exploration, then independent travel may be a better choice, as it allows the most freedom to go at your own pace, and as long as you abide by local customs, you can travel almost anywhere. On the other hand, if you are taking a trip for relaxation or romance, you will almost certainly experience more of both when surrounded by like-minded people. Speaking of being able to relax, openly discuss what you want from your vacation with your travel consultant early in the planning process - then you’ll know you can go where you want to go and do what you want to do.

Surveys have indicated that a gay or lesbian traveler typically seeks originality, excitement, dining, local culture and affordability in their travel options. Which brings us back to our original point, doesn’t it? Travel is travel, and our small differences shadow our likenesses. All in all, a bit of expert planning will make travel for gays and lesbians every bit as comfortable and fulfilling as they want it to be - just as it should be.
