THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

MONTSERRAT, “THE EMERALD ISLE”

The Beautiful Gem of the Caribbean, Montserrat

 by Arty Blazer

in Travel / Destinations    (submitted 2010-11-25)

Called the Emerald of the Caribbean, Montserrat is a beautiful island covered by rainforest. The place has Irish influences, and the people here are well known for their friendliness. The place is also ideal for spending time in the heart of nature or for sun bathing.

The island is volcanic and was once colonized by the Irish trying to escape persecution. Montserrat is quite little and is not usually a place tourists go when traveling to the Caribbean. However, getting off the beaten path will surely be worth your while as the beaches here are truly wonderful and the landscape is beautiful, with lush forests, hills and waterfalls. The locals celebrate Saint Patrick's Day as a tribute to their Irish heritage. There are many activities on the island, such as hiking, bird watching or climbing.

Unfortunately, things have changed a lot during the last years. More than a decade ago the volcano on the island started erupting again. Almost half of the island is now hard to access, and it is not recommended to venture onto the pyroclastic fields. The capital of the island was entirely destroyed, and now, the people traveling to this area are those interested in the volcano's activities.
Still, if you want to learn about the secrets the Emerald of the Caribbean still has, you can visit the northern part of the island where tourism is still flourishing. No damage by the volcano eruptions reached this area. A new airport was built, and you can fly in here from Antigua.

On the beautiful beaches of Montserrat, life is still tranquil and wonderful. The atmosphere is low key, and the breeze is perfect. The beaches are not very crowded, and you will notice that the once white sand is now grey due to the volcanic ash brought here by the wind. White sands can still be found at Rendezvous Bay. In order to get there, you will have to take a water taxi or hike. The beach here is pristine, with pink shells and corals everywhere. The water is blue and clear, and there is no better place in Montserrat to enjoy a day at the beach.

An activity that nature lovers will surely enjoy is the turtle egg hatching. You may have seen the little turtles hatching from eggs on TV, but it is an entirely different story when you see it live. This takes place in August and September, and is a great event to witness. If you want to watch little turtles swimming around, you can do so at Woodlands Beach.

Travelers can also enjoy the beautiful views of the reefs around the island. Scuba diving is among one of the top activities as the underwater landscape is truly wonderful, with multi-colored corals and different species of fish.

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

MONTSERRAT, “THE EMERALD ISLE”

BY CLAY LARROY

It doesn't matter if you take a trip across the state line or the border, being far from home can be exciting and also a bit stressful. When considering traveling, it is important to think of the best mode of travel. Traveling by car can offer many more sights and opportunities for side trips. Traveling by train can offer a chance to relax and get some work done if they wanted. Planes can cover ground fast but don't allow much movement and one cannot get off the plane in flight. Each mode of travel has its own advantages and disadvantages to be considered. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Things to see and do in Montserrat

Bird spotting

Look out for the icterus oberi (a species of oriole), Montserrat's national bird, at Centre and Silver Hill in the north of the island.

Go fishing

Hire a fishing boat and try your luck at catching marlin, wahoo or tuna.

Hiking trails

Lace up your hiking boots and explore Montserrat on foot. Popular routes are the Cot trail (which runs through an oki banana plantation to a historic family house), Runaway Ghaut, the Blackwood Allen trail, and the Silver Hills trail (which passes through one of the island's oldest volcanic centers).

Local footy match

Time your trip to coincide with a friendly football match between the Montserrat national side and a visiting European team.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Meet the scientists monitoring volcanic activity at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), they take visitors on a tour of the facility (www.mvo.ms).

Oriole Complex

Trace Montserrat's history at the Oriole Complex, and take a guided tour of the gardens.

Pelican Point

Make your way to Pelican Point on the east coast, home to the island's only breeding colony of the spectacular frigate birds.

Plymouth

From Richmond Hill, cast your eye over the abandoned capital, Plymouth. The town now lies buried in ash, vanishing a little more each year as mudflows and volcanic debris mount up.

Rendezvous Bay

Travel by boat to Rendezvous Bay and enjoy the only white (coral) sand beach in Montserrat; sand in the other bays is of volcanic origin and may be grey or black.

Snorkel and scuba

Duck underwater with a snorkel and mask or plunge deeper with full scuba gear. Montserrat's reefs are teeming with colourful coral and fish (www.divemontserrat.com or www.seawolfdivingschool.com).

Soufrière Hills volcano

Take the opportunity to see an active volcano, and the devastation caused by the 1997 eruption, from the viewing platform on Jack Boy Hill.

St Patrick's Week

Join in the festivities during St Patrick's Week, which commemorates Montserrat's slave uprising on 17 March 1768 as well as celebrating the island's Irish heritage.

Tour the island

Take a two-hour boat tour round the island to see the Soufrière Hills volcano, the Tar River Delta and the remnants of the old W H Bramble Airport (www.divemontserrat.com).

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

MONTSERRAT, “THE EMERALD ISLE”
BY CLAY LARROY

Leisure travel is a wonderful experience that everyone should have in their lifetime. Even business travel can be made enjoyable. There are some aspects of travel that can detract from your enjoyment.  When planning to fly for a trip, don't forget any frequent flier miles you might have racked up. It does you no good to hang onto those once you've already gone on your big vacation. Even if you don't have enough miles to cover the whole trip, many airlines will allow you to discount your rate using your miles. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Montserrat is a quiet, laid-back island where you can hike, birdwatch, snorkel, or enjoy a couple of drinks over a game of dominoes.
The tiny Caribbean island was dealt a devastating blow when the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted massively in 1995 and again in 1997. Almost half the island was rendered uninhabitable, including the capital, Plymouth, which today stands half-submerged in volcanic ash and mud. The effects were not limited to physical destruction. Montserrat's economy was severely damaged, and around two-thirds of the 12,000 population left the island.
The volcano remains active and much of the island is still out of bounds, but this in itself is a draw for tourists looking for something beyond the usual Caribbean experience of beaches and luxury resorts.
Best Time To Visit
The climate is subtropical, tempered by trade winds. There is little climatic variation throughout the year making Montserrat a great year round destination. The heaviest rainfall occurs between July and November; however, the heavy cloudbursts serve to refresh the atmosphere and once they are over the sun reappears.
Required Clothing
Tropical lightweights are worn, with light woollens for cooler evenings. A light raincoat or an umbrella is useful.
Geography
Montserrat is one of the Leeward Islands group in the Eastern Caribbean. It is a volcanic island with black sandy beaches and lush tropical vegetation. There are three main volcanic mountains on the island and Chances Peak is its highest point at 915m (3,002ft). The Soufrière group of hills houses the volcano which began erupting in July 1995 and to date is continuously active. The Great Alps Waterfall, previously one of the most spectacular sights in the West Indies, has been destroyed by the volcano.

Where to stay in Montserrat

Hotels

There are two hotels - the 18-room Tropical Mansion Suites and the Vue Pointe Hotel. The Vue Pointe is temporarily closed owing to increased volcanic activity. A 10% accommodation tax is charged for hotels.

Bed And Breakfast

Montserrat has several guest houses. Visit the Montserrat Tourist Board's website for a full list (see Contact Addresses). A 7% accommodation tax is charged for guest houses and bed and breakfasts.

Other

The Hot Rock Hostel opened in May 2006 and is Montserrat's first youth hostel, offering budget accommodation in bunk beds.
Villas and apartments are available, many with their own swimming pools; the Montserrat Tourist Board provides a list on its website. A 7% accommodation tax is charged for villas.

Things to see and do in Saba

Climbers paradise

Climb up one of the island's many outcrops as recommended by the Saba Conservation Foundation. With it's volcanic terrain and unique geology, Saba is something of a climbers paradise, with a wealth of dramatic drop-offs and boulders to keep even the most hardened adrenaline junky amused.

Fort Bay

Visit the rocky beach at Fort Bay, where a dramatic steep climb of 800 steps has been carved out of the rock. En route to the summit walkers will pass the island's four villages, which are mere clusters of ornate timber cottages perching on the flanks of the mountain.

Harry L Johnson Memorial Museum

Take in the Harry L Johnson Memorial Museum in Windwardside, the restored home of a Dutch sea captain. Windwardside also contains the tourist office, the island's two largest guest houses and most of its shops.

Hiking trails

Get active and head up one of the many marked hiking trails that lead up to Mount Scenery, from where you can take in the stunning views. Although some of the more difficult trails require a guide, many of the easier routes will take you through Saba's lush rain forest, tidepools and fascinating historic ruins.

Hilltop spa retreat

Relax at the island's hilltop spa retreat, where you can indulge in a treatment or meditate with a spot of yoga.
Marine life
Experience the stunning marine life along Saba's craggy coastline. Although Saba has no beaches, the waters around the island have been declared a protected marine park in recognition of the unique opportunities for wall diving. Giant sea turtles and humpback whales are seasonal visitors.
The Bottom
Visit the island's capital, The Bottom, where the Artisan Foundation exhibits early examples of 'Saba lace': intricate embroidery on linen that resembles lace.

Climate

Best Time To Visit

Hot, but tempered by cooling trade winds. The annual mean temperature is 27°C (80°F), varying by no more than two or three degrees throughout the year; average rainfall is 1,667mm. The temperature can drop to 16°C (60°F) on winter evenings. When climbing Mount Scenery, the temperature will drop by approximately 0.2°C (0.4°F) for each 100m (330ft) gained in altitude.

Required Clothing

Lightweights and cottons are worn throughout the year. Umbrellas or light waterproofs are needed for the rainy season.

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

SABA, “THE UNSPOILED QUEEN”

BY CLAY LARROY

Do you feel like it is time for a short vacation? The Caribbean is a wonderful vacation destination. Once you decide to travel, how good you plan the trip will help you feel comfortable and be comfortable at your destination. Not only will you feel less anxiety before the trip, but you can rest assured that once you arrive where you're going you will have a good understanding of what's going on there.  When you need to plan a vacation contact me!

Saba sits majestically at the peak of a submerged extinct volcano. As such, the island abounds with stunning vistas of dramatic cliff faces and spectacular rocky shorelines. With only one road ('The Road') and a population of less than 1,500, Saba is the most unspoiled island of the former Netherlands Antilles, and the superb preservation of the island's unique ecosystem has earned it the nickname of 'The Unspoiled Queen'.
In fact, until 50 years ago, Saba was a secluded oasis, having neither an airport nor a sheltered harbor. There are four villages, which until recently were only connected by thousands of steps cut into the rock. A road now links the airport with the island's capital, The Bottom. The Bottom is situated 250m (820ft) above the ocean on a plateau surrounded by volcanic domes.
Saba, a special municipality of The Netherlands, was a member of the Netherland Antilles until it was dissolved on 10 October 2010.
Saba was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493, by Sir Francis Drake in 1595 and by two Dutch expeditions in the 1620s. In 1632, a party of Englishmen was shipwrecked on the tiny island and found it uninhabited, although there were traces of Carib occupation. Permanent settlement by Europeans did not occur until the second half of the 17th century, when the Dutch were consolidating their Caribbean empire, based on Curaçao. The settlers founded an agricultural economy with sugar and indigo as the key crops. The decline in these markets forced the population to maintain their modest prosperity through fishing and embroidery which, together with low-key tourism, remain the major sources of income.

The island changed hands 12 times between 1632 and 1816, when it was finally confirmed as a Dutch possession. As part of the Netherlands Antilles, Saba gained partial independence from The Netherlands in 1954. The issue of the Antilles' constitutional status never left the political agenda, however, and was the subject of a referendum on the three Windward Islands in 1994. All three voted to remain within the Antilles but Saba registered the largest majority of 91 per cent.

The socialist Frente Obrero Liberashon (Workers' Liberation Front) won the largest number of seats in the 2002 general election, but was excluded from office by a four-party centre-right coalition led by the Partido Antia Restruktura (PAR, Party for the Restructured Antilles). The PAR, based on the island of Curaçao, dominated Antilles' politics since its formation a decade ago.
After the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, Saba became a special municipality of The Netherlands and is under the direct administration of the European country. Saba adopted the U.S. dollar as its currency on 1 January 2011, replacing the Netherlands Antillian Guilder.

Getting There By Air

Airlines serving Saba include Winair ( www.fly-winair.com). The main airport is Juancho Yrausquin (SAB) at Cove Bay. The runway, at 400m (1,300ft) is one of the shortest in the world.

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS, "QUEEN OF THE CARIBEES"

BY CLAY LARROY

Traveling can be a great way to meet new people and experience other cultures. New friends are waiting to meet you in places you have only dreamed of traveling. It can be a wonderful way to see all that the world has to offer. Travel can be a hobby and an adventure that will lead you to unexpected places. The Caribbean is a close locations to take vacations. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

Things to see and do in St Kitts And Nevis

Basseterre

Basseterre, the picturesque capital, located near the seaboard of the west coast, retains the flavor of both French and British occupation, and there are many Georgian buildings surrounding Independence Square. Other sights in or near the capital include: The Circus, the public market, St George's Church, Craft House, Brimstone Hill Fortress (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Black Rocks, Romney Manor and the Caribelle Batik Factory, the Primate Research Centre, Frigate Bay Development, the southeastern peninsula and Mount Liamuiga's volcanic crater.

Brimstone Hill

At Brimstone Hill, set your eyes on one of the most impressive New World forts, built on the peak of a sulphuric prominence, known as 'The Gibraltar of the West Indies'. It commands the southern approach to what were the sugar mill plains, and boasts a splendid view of the nearby islands of Saba and St Eustatius. Built in 1690, Brimstone was the scene of a number of Franco-British battles during the 18th century.

Charlestown

Charlestown, the capital, is a delightful town, with weathered wooden buildings decorated like delicate gingerbread and great arches of brilliantly colored bougainvillea. The town contains several reminders of Nevisian history, such as the Cotton Ginnery, Alexander Hamilton's birthplace and museum, the Court House, the War Memorial, the Alexandra Hospital and the Jewish Cemetery. Some of the plantation houses have now been transformed into superb hotels, such as the famous Nisbet. Other sights in or near Charlestown include: Nevis Philatelic Bureau, the Public Library, the Market, Bath House (one of the oldest hotels in the Leeward Islands), Eva Wilkin's studio, Eden Brown's Great House, Fig Tree Church, Nelson Museum, Bath Hot Springs, the Botanical Gardens of Nevis and the Newcastle Pottery.

Frigate Bay

Frigate Bay is the main resort area on the island and boasts two fine beaches, hotels, a golf course and a casino.
Hiking trails
There are several hiking trails leading into the mountains or through the rainforest. Local guides can be arranged through hotels.
Horse riding
Horse riding in the rainforest or on the beach can be arranged through hotels.
Pinney's Beach
North of Charlestown is Pinney's Beach, one of the best on the island, an expanse of silver sand, backed by palm trees. Head further north still to Black Sand Beach and Hurricane Hill, which offer excellent views of both St Kitts and Barbuda.
Swimming
Swimming is excellent; most hotels have freshwater pools and some have their own beaches. Scuba-diving and snorkeling are catered for and beach hotels generally have equipment. Several Basseterre skippers are equipped to take scuba parties. There are dozens of unexplored wrecks around the islands. Sailing boats can be hired from beach hotels, although Nevis has very limited facilities. Fast boats and waterskiing equipment are available for hire. Fishing trips can be organized. Deep-sea fishing is a specialty.

Shopping & nightlife in St Kitts And Nevis

Local crafts include carvings, batik, wall hangings, leather art and coconut work. Local textiles and designs are also available. Stamp collectors should note the excellent Philatelic Bureaux in Basseterre and Charlestown. Duty-free shopping is relatively new to St Kitts and, as yet, only a few shops feature imported merchandise at substantial savings. Nevis' hot pepper sauce, ranked among the Caribbean's best, is a good take-home item and can be bought at the Main Street grocery in Charlestown. There are shopping malls on St Kitts these include TDC Mall and Pelican Mall. Friday and Saturday are the busy market days, and visitors should not miss the chance to witness this abundance of exotic food stalls, accompanied by lively local chatter.

Opening Hours

Mon-Sat 0830-1200 and 1300-1600; some shops close early on Thursday.

Nightlife

Very low key. A number of hotels and inns have string or steel bands to dance to on Saturday nights in the peak season, and there is a disco called J's Place at the foot of the Brimstone Hill Fortress in St Kitts. Reflections Night Club, also in St Kitts, is open until the small hours. St Kitts has two casinos in Frigate Bay, complete with slot machines, roulette wheels and blackjack tables. In Nevis, Club Trenim is recommended. Otherwise, entertainment centers around the pleasant bars of the inns and hotels.

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, “CARIBBEAN UNPLUGGED”

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS, "QUEEN OF THE CARIBEES,"

BY CLAY LARROY

Travel is so much more that simply hopping on a flight to a new destination. If you plan it correctly, it could be a thrilling time you'll never forget. Planning a trip is fun as there are tons of things to do and see. Do you know how to plan a trip effectively? Packing light is key to making your travels as easy and free of stress as possible. Bring one carryon bag that includes everything you need, not necessarily everything you want. Your smart packing will pay off when you are happily carrying one bag around on vacation instead of lugging around multiple bags around the Caribbean. When you want to plan a vacation contact me!

The beautiful islands of St Kitts and Nevis offer an intoxicating blend of sun, sea, lush greenery, spa retreats and absolute luxury.
Commercialization has not yet taken over and travelers will enjoy the easygoing, quiet way of life of the local people which remains almost unspoiled. The exotically beautiful island of St. Kitts seems to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is palpably luxuriant. At the center of St. Kitts stands the spectacular, cloud-fringed peak of Mount Liamuiga (pronounced Lee-a-mweega), a dormant volcano covered by a dense tropical forest.

Since the 18th century, Nevis has been known as the 'Queen of the Caribbean', and over the last 100 years, the island has become one of the world's most exclusive resorts and spas. Most of the original plantation owners lived on the island and it became renowned as a center of elegant and gracious living. Although Nevis has lived through an earthquake and a tidal wave, which is claimed to have buried the former capital, the island is still dotted, as is St Kitts, with fascinating old buildings and historic sites, a delight for any traveler looking for their next Caribbean adventure.

Climate

Best Time To Visit

Hot and tropical climate tempered by trade winds throughout most of the year. The driest period is from January to April and there is increased rainfall in summer and towards the end of the year. The volume of rain varies according to altitude; rain showers can occur throughout the year. The average annual rainfall is about 125cm (50in) to 200cm (80in) with a wetter season from May to October. Like the other Leeward Islands, St Kitts lies in the track of violent tropical hurricanes which are most likely to develop between August and October.

Required Clothing

Tropical lightweights, with light rainwear advisable all year round.

Geography

St Kitts (officially known as St Christopher) lies in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. The high central body of the island is made up of three groups of rugged volcanic peaks split by deep ravines. The vegetation on the central mountain range is rainforest, thinning higher up to dense bushy cover. From here, the island's volcanic crater, Mount Liamuiga, rises to almost 1,200m (4,000ft). The foothills, particularly to the north, form a gently rolling landscape of sugar-cane plantations and grassland, while uncultivated lowland slopes are covered with thick tropical woodland and exotic fruits such as papaya, mangoes, avocados, bananas and breadfruit. To the southeast of the island, a low-lying peninsula, on which there are many excellent beaches, stretches towards Nevis.

Some 3km (2 miles) to the south and only minutes away by air or ferry across The Narrows channel is the smaller island of Nevis, which is almost circular in shape. The island is skirted by miles of silver-sand beaches, golden coconut groves and a calm, turquoise sea in which great brown pelicans dive for the rich harvest of fish. The central peak of the island, Nevis Peak, is 985m (3,232ft) high and its tip is usually capped with white clouds. The mountain is flanked on the north and south sides by two lesser mountains, Saddle Hill and Hurricane Hill, which once served as look-out posts for Nelson's fleet. Hurricane Hill on the north side commands a view of St Kitts and Barbuda. On the island's west side, massed rows of palm trees form a coconut forest. There are pleasant coral beaches on the island's north and west coasts.
